Newmarket boss Amy Starkey believes the initiative to offer students free entry to the Weekend of Champions on October 17 and 18 is a great chance to showcase horse racing.
Students have been offered the chance to attend the top quality racing that includes six Group 1 races, which are set to be decided on Dubai Future Champions Day on Newmarket’s Rowley Mile and QIPCO British Champions Day at Ascot.
“We recognise that many people start their passion for racing at a young age and believe that the quality of the racing on offer will be a perfect introduction to our sport,” said Starkey, the former Kempton Park managing director who is now regional director for Jockey Club east. “We are looking forward to welcoming students to this great day’s racing on Dubai Future Champions Day.”
The initiative is sponsored by Sheikh Fahad al Thani of QIPCO Holding, who revealed that his own interest in horse racing started at a similar age.
“My passion for racing developed while I was a student studying in London,” he said. “It is important to my brothers and me that British racing is pro-active in introducing more young people to this wonderful sport.
“Being the day on which the best of British flat racing is celebrated, QIPCO British Champions Day provides a great opportunity to develop the next generation of racing devotees.”
Rod Street, chief executive of British Champions Series said: “We are very grateful to Sheikh Fahad and QIPCO for their generous sponsorship of the student initiative at QIPCO British Champions Day which has allowed us to offer the first 2,000 students free entry.
“Not only will they enjoy top class action on the track but there will also be an exclusive student area with great entertainment, dedicated facilities and after-party to provide them with an all-round brilliant raceday experience.”
