Lester Piggott, the nine-time Derby-winning jockey attended the Investec Spring Meeting at Epsom on Wednesday where he was presented with the inaugural Derby Cap.

The cap, which will be presented to jockeys to mark their debut ride in the Investec Derby, was unveiled at the racetrack’s first flat meeting of 2015.

To celebrate its introduction, the first ever Derby Cap was presented to Piggott, whose first ride in the race was on Zucchero in 1951.

In this inaugural year, a Derby Cap will be presented to each jockey who has a ride in the Investec Derby. Thereafter, the cap will be presented to jockeys who are having their first ride in the Derby.

Simon Durrant, Epsom Downs’ general manager said: “Many other sports use caps to commemorate great achievements and landmarks so we felt the introduction of a Derby Cap was an appropriate way for young jockeys to remember this milestone in their careers and something that young jockeys can aspire to receive.”
