TIGER Roll targets a third win in the Randox Grand National as he heads 106 entries for the world’s greatest steeplechase at Aintree on April 10.

Tiger Roll won the Aintree showpiece in 2018 and 2019 and was favourite for the 2020 National before horse racing in the UK was suspended last March due to Covid-19.

The 11-year-old bids to become the second triple Grand National winner alongside the legendary Red Rum who won the unique four miles, two furlongs and 74 yards contest in 1973, 1974 and 1977.

Tiger Roll’s trainer Gordon Elliott, who was also triumphant with Silver Birch in 2007, is the most successful current trainer in the Randox Grand National and one more victory would see him join Fred Rimell and Ginger McCain as the most successful Grand National handlers of all time.

Elliott, based in County Meath, Ireland, has 16 entries – the most of any trainer. His potential runners also include five-time Grade 1 winner Delta Work.

Nicky Henderson has the most entries of UK-based trainers, with six potential candidates.

The Randox Grand National is the one major race to have eluded the six-time and reigning champion trainer, who has twice saddled the runner-up (Zongalero 1979 and The Tsarevich 1987).

“It’s [The Grand National] the race isn’t it?” Henderson said to the Racing Post. “It’s the biggest of the lot. “We’ve been involved in it for years and there is something very special about it – it’s very historic and the whole meeting has a terrific atmosphere. My whole life has revolved around National Hunt racing so, not surprisingly, winning the Grand National would be very special.”
